Criminal Cases

All Elkhart County Courts have criminal jurisdiction over felonies, misdemeanors, infractions and ordinance violations according to the filing order listed in the Elkhart County Local Rules.

Civil & Protective Orders

All Elkhart County Courts have jurisdiction over civil cases. Pursuant to the Elkhart County Local Rules, however, some types of filings may only be made in a specific court or courts.

Small Claims

The small claims court allows citizens to bring lawsuits in an informal manner and does not require a party to hire an attorney. The small claims court provides a speedy, reasonably inexpensive and uncomplicated means of determining your claim.

Title IV-D Court

Our statutes permit the Elkhart County Prosecutor to intervene in a family law matter in order to establish paternity of a minor child, to establish or modify child support, or to enforce existing child support orders.

Self-Represented Litigants

The Elkhart County Judges, along with the Indiana Supreme Court, recommend against your attempting to proceed in court without the representation of a lawyer. Representing yourself in court should not be taken lightly, and there are many instances in which hiring an attorney is a good idea. If you are charged with a criminal offense, the Court can appoint an attorney for you.
